What this recipe cost calculator does

Home cooks and small food businesses rarely know what a dish actually costs, because grocery bills are paid per package, not per gram used in a single recipe. This calculator solves that mismatch: enter what you paid for each ingredient's package, how much of that package the recipe uses, and it works out the true cost consumed by that one dish.

This is different from simply totalling a shopping bill, because a 1kg bag of flour costing ₹60 does not mean a recipe using 200g of it costs ₹60 — it costs a fifth of that. The tool applies that proportional math automatically across every ingredient row you add.

Why cost-per-serving matters more than total cost

Total recipe cost tells you what the whole pot costs, but cost per serving is what actually matters for pricing a menu item, comparing recipes, or simply understanding whether a dish is affordable for a weekday dinner. Two recipes can cost the same in total yet have very different per-serving economics once you account for how many people they feed.

This is why the calculator asks for the number of servings separately from the ingredient list — so you can quickly test 'what if I make this for 4 people' versus 'what if I make it for 10' without re-entering every ingredient.

Tips for accurate results

Keep package price and package amount in the same unit as the amount used — grams with grams, millilitres with millilitres, or count with count (e.g. 6 eggs purchased, 2 eggs used). Mixing units, like entering a package size in kilograms but the used amount in grams, will silently produce a wrong ratio, so double-check units before calculating.

Remember to add non-ingredient costs like cooking gas, packaging, or delivery containers in the extra costs field if you are pricing a dish for sale — these are easy to forget but they add up quickly across many orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool store my prices anywhere?

No. Every calculation happens directly in your browser using JavaScript — nothing you type is sent to a server or saved once you leave the page.

Can I use this for a food business, not just home cooking?

Yes. Many small home bakers and tiffin services use exactly this kind of per-serving cost breakdown to set fair prices that still cover ingredient cost.

What if I don't know the exact package price?

Use your best recent estimate — most people find their grocery bill or a quick online price check to be accurate enough for everyday recipe costing.

Can I add more than three ingredients?

Yes, use the 'Add ingredient' button as many times as you need; there is no limit on the number of rows.
